19th Century Deacons Bench In Original Paint
A fine & rare antique American painted and profusely stenciled Windsor bench/settee. Pennsylvania, circa 1850.
This rare bench retains the wonderful original painted and stenciled decoration of birds, flowers, leaves, fruit and berries. The decoration along the back crest is repeated on the mid-rail and front edge of the carved plank seat. The bench has a half row of spindles on three sides above a long plank seat, and is raised on eight tapered, turned legs joined by stretchers. All of the 22 spindles, the uprights, the legs and stretchers are decorated in yellow and gold to enhance the turnings and keep your eye moving along its curves. There is evidence of hand craftmanship everywhere, with plane marks on the underside of the plank seat and chamfering on the back of the crest rail.
This bench is in remarkable shape after over 150 years, is structurally sound and ready to use in your home. No restoration or repair.
